In reality, during my time playing, I saw no such methods.

However, on July 22nd (iirc, very close to the time I stopped playing), there was an update that did, indeed, implement the changes you mentioned, stating that all buildings, except the Research Lab, could be upgraded with Bling. At least they seem to be keeping mobs and traps out of the equation, for now. But it also seems like they are returning to the old “Pay-Everything-With-Bling” patch… and that’s troublesome because, to me, it means UbiSoft learned nothing from that experience.

You can buy your castle upgrades, you can buy your crafting materials, etc etc etc… It’s nothing BUT a pay-to-win, and anyone who tries to get around that will get bored very quickly. The last patch broke everyone’s castle setups and basically are ‘forcing’ everyone to regrind the whole game from scratch to ‘rebuild’ due to a magical ‘curse’ that ogt placed on everything, just so Ubi can try to grab some more money from our paychecks.

Save your self the time installing and uninstalling and go somewhere else.
