It certainly looks like it would be worth investing a weekend in at some point. Now just to find a free weekend.

It has enough content for (according to Steam) 71 hours of gameplay (on only two playthroughs), and especially the first two chapters are very good. Sadly, each chapter is shorter than the previous, so from chapter three or so it feels as if you’re quickly forced towards the end.

By focusing on a relatively small world – that gets smaller when you find the teleport stones – and fleshing it out well, Risen scratched one of my itches so well that it left me bleeding.

Another interesting change from the Gothics is the setting. Piranha Bytes seems to excel when doing exotic settings; Varant in Gothic 3 was brilliant, and the tropical island in Risen also leaves little to be desired.

Overall, the new clothes are nice enough, but I don’t really care for make-up anyway, so that’s hardly a let-down.
